Permeable paving allows water to pass through the surface into a designed layer beneath it. Depending on the system, water may infiltrate the ground or drain through an outlet. [1] The surface material alone does not determine whether the arrangement will work.

Check the ground and the incoming water

For a housing site in Kashmir, investigate soil infiltration, groundwater, loading and nearby foundations. Establish where runoff comes from and whether contamination creates a reason to avoid infiltration. Assess the full pavement build-up and its drainage route with the appropriate designer.

Provide a safe overflow arrangement. Permeable paving should not be treated as a substitute for understanding the wider drainage network or the consequences of a blocked outlet.

Check who will maintain it

Sediment can obstruct a permeable surface. Identify sources of loose soil and plan how the pavement will be protected during construction. Confirm the cleaning method and whether suitable equipment will be available.

Compare the proposal with other drainage options, including retained planting and reduced paved area. Where uncertainty remains, test a manageable section and inspect it through relevant seasons before extending the system across the development.
