Flooding in and around rivers
Catchment restoration and natural flood management. Flood-channel works in Kashmir need local hydraulic and authority review; benefits are site-dependent.
KVI-44 · Towns & everyday places
Assess opportunities to retain infiltration and surface-water routes in selected public landscapes.

UNDERSTANDING THE ISSUE
Sealed surfaces change how rainfall moves through towns. Local land-cover and catchment studies provide context, but infiltration capacity, contaminated runoff and drainage safety determine whether a particular public space can retain water usefully.
The first phase would turn this broad issue into a bounded site investigation. Current condition, the cause of change and an accountable local partnership would guide whether an intervention is appropriate.
Trees, soil, water and small habitat patches can be considered within everyday public spaces.
Access, cultural meaning and routine maintenance should shape the design.
A named custodian and a realistic care arrangement give a small project a chance to last.
PROPOSED APPROACH
Assess opportunities to retain infiltration and surface-water routes in selected public landscapes.
Survey surface-water routes, soil infiltration and drainage constraints with the site manager and specialists.
Evaluate a modest permeable-area or rainwater-retention design for a suitable site.
Record performance during rainfall, maintenance needs and any unintended ponding.
Survey surface-water routes, soil infiltration and drainage constraints with the site manager and specialists. Keep methods, dates, source records and unresolved questions together.
Evaluate a modest permeable-area or rainwater-retention design for a suitable site. Identify responsibilities, permissions, costs and continuing care before proceeding.
Record performance during rainfall, maintenance needs and any unintended ponding. State what would count as success, failure or a reason to change course.

These references offer methods to assess locally. They do not establish what will work at a selected Kashmir site.
