Community and farmer stewardship of soil, water and native vegetation. Institutions and species differ; retain local pastoral and farmer rights.
KVI-23 · Meadows & mountains
Co-design seasonal grazing and recovery trials with pastoralists using forage and vegetation measurements.

UNDERSTANDING THE ISSUE
Research across Kashmir pastures links vegetation condition with grazing pressures, but grazing is also part of livelihoods and landscape use. A practical project needs to distinguish locally excessive pressure from appropriate seasonal use and other causes of degradation.
The first phase would turn this broad issue into a bounded site investigation. Current condition, the cause of change and an accountable local partnership would guide whether an intervention is appropriate.
Mountain vegetation, soils and water bodies require care suited to their condition and season.
Pastoralists, residents and visitors need a place in decisions about landscape use.
Repeat observations help distinguish lasting recovery from seasonal appearance.
PROPOSED APPROACH
Co-design seasonal grazing and recovery trials with pastoralists using forage and vegetation measurements.
Document forage, vegetation, seasonal use and pastoral priorities at a candidate pasture.
Co-design a limited recovery or seasonal grazing trial with the people who depend on it.
Repeat forage and vegetation measures and assess effects on access and livelihoods.
Document forage, vegetation, seasonal use and pastoral priorities at a candidate pasture. Keep methods, dates, source records and unresolved questions together.
Co-design a limited recovery or seasonal grazing trial with the people who depend on it. Identify responsibilities, permissions, costs and continuing care before proceeding.
Repeat forage and vegetation measures and assess effects on access and livelihoods. State what would count as success, failure or a reason to change course.
