The problem

Kashmir rice germplasm research documents valuable diversity; it does not establish the current rate of loss from farmers' fields. Conservation needs to find which varieties are still grown, why people retain or abandon them and how healthy seed can remain available.

This opportunity begins with checking whether the suspected problem is present and significant at a named site. A field baseline, the relevant technical partners and local priorities would determine whether CCK should develop it further.

Why this matters

Working ecosystems

Soil, water, crop diversity and insects are connected parts of farming landscapes.

Farmer participation

An intervention needs to fit the grower’s practical constraints and livelihood priorities.

Comparable outcomes

Ecological observations and farm performance should both inform whether a trial is useful.

A first investigation: loss of local crop diversity

Document which traditional varieties remain in use and explore farmer-led conservation with seed institutions.

01

Understand the site

Document varieties in use and farmer knowledge with consent and seed-institution support.

02

Shape a bounded trial

Explore a farmer-led seed conservation and exchange pilot with clear governance and seed-health arrangements.

03

Follow what changes

Track viable seed, participation and continued cultivation of the agreed varieties.

What this work could produce

A documented baseline

Document varieties in use and farmer knowledge with consent and seed-institution support. Keep methods, dates, source records and unresolved questions together.

A practical project brief

Explore a farmer-led seed conservation and exchange pilot with clear governance and seed-health arrangements. Identify responsibilities, permissions, costs and continuing care before proceeding.

A repeatable observation plan

Track viable seed, participation and continued cultivation of the agreed varieties. State what would count as success, failure or a reason to change course.

Questions to resolve

  • Which farmers and varieties should anchor a locally useful seed partnership?
  • Which local partners, custodians and affected people should shape the brief?
  • What baseline, specialist review and permissions are needed?
  • Who could sustain the work and repeat the observations?
