Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration
Protecting appropriate existing regeneration with land users. Temperate forest regeneration and open meadow conservation require different reference ecosystems.
KVI-17 · Forests & native plants
Test whether reducing the actual local stress allows native seedlings and vegetation to recover.

UNDERSTANDING THE ISSUE
Poor regeneration can persist when browsing, repeated disturbance or unsuitable site conditions prevent seedlings from establishing. Local passive-restoration work suggests a useful question: whether removing the actual stress would allow recovery before additional planting is considered.
The first phase would turn this broad issue into a bounded site investigation. Current condition, the cause of change and an accountable local partnership would guide whether an intervention is appropriate.
Species composition, regeneration and habitat structure matter alongside vegetation cover.
The reference ecosystem and the cause of damage should guide the choice of intervention.
Plant and habitat recovery can require continuing attention beyond an initial activity.
PROPOSED APPROACH
Test whether reducing the actual local stress allows native seedlings and vegetation to recover.
Record seedlings, seed sources and likely pressures in matched affected and reference plots.
Test protection from a demonstrated pressure in a small, agreed area while retaining a comparison.
Count recruitment and survival and record whether the original pressure has changed.
Record seedlings, seed sources and likely pressures in matched affected and reference plots. Keep methods, dates, source records and unresolved questions together.
Test protection from a demonstrated pressure in a small, agreed area while retaining a comparison. Identify responsibilities, permissions, costs and continuing care before proceeding.
Count recruitment and survival and record whether the original pressure has changed. State what would count as success, failure or a reason to change course.
